The Vision

When this West Seattle couple approached Armada Design & Build, they had a dream to transform their small, 1940s home into a spacious, modern residence while preserving the charm and character of the neighborhood. Their goal was not simply to build a new, larger home but to create a seamless extension of the original architecture that blended perfectly with the surrounding craftsman-style homes. They envisioned a four-story structure that would discreetly fit within the community aesthetic, allowing it to look as though it had always been there. With this vision in mind, we embarked on a detailed journey from consultation to construction, collaborating closely with the couple to bring their vision to life.

Our initial consultations were focused on understanding the couple’s lifestyle and aspirations for their home. They were clear about their desire to maintain the craftsman character associated with the 1940s, incorporating timeless architectural details that would honor the neighborhood’s roots. We also discussed their need for a safe, versatile space that could serve as a children’s play area, storage, or even a storm shelter. With these priorities in mind, our design and construction team set out to craft a home that would blend the best of vintage charm with modern functionality.

The first challenge was to maximize the space on the existing lot while maintaining the home’s exterior look in line with traditional craftsman design. We decided on a three-story façade, carefully concealing a fourth floor below to allow the structure to rise gracefully within its surroundings. Our team designed a basement that would house a multi-functional room, doubling as both a safe room and a kids’ play area, complete with reinforced walls and discrete storage for emergency supplies. This area offered the family peace of mind, knowing they had a secure, protected space within their home.

Throughout the design phase, we were meticulous in selecting exterior materials that would help the house look as if it had always belonged to the neighborhood. The exterior was clad in traditional wood siding, painted in a color palette that echoed the soft, muted tones of neighboring homes. We included craftsman-style details, such as exposed beams, a gabled roof, and wood-clad windows that lent an authentic look to the facade. Every element, from the trim details to the choice of hardware, was carefully chosen to honor the architectural styles of the past.

Inside, we maintained a balance between vintage and modern, creating a space that felt cozy yet spacious. Hardwood floors reminiscent of the home’s original design were installed throughout, adding warmth and character. The staircase, designed to connect the upper stories with the hidden basement, was built with stained wood and simple, elegant balusters, maintaining the craftsman aesthetic. The open floor plan on the main level was thoughtfully arranged, providing a natural flow from one room to the next, while maintaining distinct areas for living, dining, and kitchen spaces.

Construction was carefully managed to respect both the couple’s vision and the unique challenges of building a four-story structure in a neighborhood of older homes. Our team collaborated with structural engineers to ensure the stability and durability of the expanded footprint, while keeping the foundation reinforced to accommodate the additional levels. Excavation for the basement was carried out with precision, ensuring the surrounding land remained undisturbed as we created the new, secure lower level. Throughout the project, we worked closely with the couple, providing regular updates and adjusting details to ensure their expectations were met at every stage.

The end result was a stunning blend of new construction and craftsman design—a home that felt like a natural part of the neighborhood while providing the family with the space and security they needed. The home’s subtle exterior and carefully chosen materials allow it to blend seamlessly with the 1940s charm of West Seattle, capturing the timeless spirit of its surroundings. Inside, the blend of modern functionality and classic design elements create a warm, inviting atmosphere that the family will enjoy for years to come. Armada Design & Build was proud to bring this vision to life, creating a home that truly reflects the essence of the neighborhood and the values of the family who calls it home.

A Blended Dwelling

One of the standout features of the renovation was the creation of a picture-perfect wrap-around deck. This outdoor space, complete with built-in heaters and a charming porch swing, was designed to provide a comfortable and inviting area for relaxation and entertainment. The deck not only adds to the home’s appeal but also extends the living space, making it perfect for enjoying sunny days and warm evenings.

Inside, the home was transformed with a variety of elegant touches. We incorporated gorgeous millwork and built-ins that added character and sophistication to the interior. Flooring options were carefully selected to match the home’s style and enhance its functionality.

From ceramic tile and engineered hardwood to vinyl and carpet, each choice was made to provide durability and visual appeal. Special features such as forced air heating, a HEPA air filtration system, and a tankless water heater were integrated to enhance the home’s comfort and efficiency. The property is also wired for high-tech cabling and includes a modern security system, combining convenience with security.

Custom Kitchen

The kitchen in this West Seattle home was designed as both a gathering space and a chef’s dream, blending modern functionality with timeless design. To create a harmonious look, we chose United Tile’s Agate Glass Mosaic from Lunada Bay as the backsplash, which brought a soft elegance and a unique texture to the room. This paired beautifully with Bedrosians Cloe ceramic tiles, which added a hint of classic charm, and a matching ceramic trim that completed the seamless design.

Functionality was at the forefront in this kitchen. We installed a spacious Elkay sink, ideal for everything from prep work to cleanup, and paired it with a sleek American Standard faucet for ease of use. The garbage disposal system was selected to handle daily needs effortlessly, enhancing both convenience and cleanliness. Custom cabinetry provided ample storage, allowing the family to keep the space organized and uncluttered. The cabinets, paired with the quartz countertops, created a warm, inviting feel that fit perfectly with the home’s classic character.

Through these choices, the kitchen became a space where the homeowners could enjoy both cooking and gathering, a reflection of Armada Design & Build’s commitment to creating beautiful, functional spaces that fit seamlessly into daily life.

Bathroom

The bathrooms in this home were designed to provide a relaxing, spa-like experience while maintaining a timeless look that complements the craftsman aesthetic. In the master bath, we introduced luxurious elements such as an Amba towel warmer, allowing the homeowners to enjoy warm towels after a bath or shower. Delta fixtures in a rich bronze finish added a touch of elegance and matched seamlessly across the tissue holder, towel ring, and robe hook. We chose durable White Oak floors finished with DuraSeal for a warm foundation, while Arizona Tile porcelain created a lasting, easy-to-maintain surface on the walls.

Each bathroom was thoughtfully tailored to its specific use. The guest bathroom, for example, features a stunning mosaic tile design by Arizona Tile, paired with elegant, slim ceramic trims that add subtle sophistication. The kids’ bathroom is equipped with practical yet beautiful Delta accessories and a deep tub by Signature Hardware, making it the perfect combination of functionality and style for a family.

Every fixture and finish was chosen for durability and aesthetic appeal, creating spaces that feel fresh and luxurious yet blend seamlessly with the home’s craftsman roots. By blending contemporary functionality with classic design, Armada Design & Build crafted bathrooms that are beautiful, resilient, and built to enhance everyday living.

Our Process

This West Seattle home project exemplifies how thoughtful design can blend modern functionality with classic charm. When the homeowners first connected with Armada Design & Build, they were determined to expand their small 1940s home into a larger, four-story residence that felt authentically rooted in the neighborhood’s craftsman character. The goal was not only to enhance their living space but to ensure the new construction felt timeless, as though it had always belonged in the surrounding community.

Our collaborative process began with an in-depth consultation where we explored the couple’s vision for each space, from overall layout to specific materials and finishes. They were particularly keen on a design that honored traditional craftsman architecture while accommodating modern amenities. For the exterior, we chose classic wood siding in a muted color palette that echoed the neighboring homes. To enhance this, we incorporated craftsman-inspired elements, such as exposed beams, gabled roofs, and wood-trimmed windows. These details created a sense of history and cohesion, making the home feel as though it were an original part of the community.

Inside, the design choices were all about balancing style and function. The kitchen achieved a timeless yet refreshing look, while custom cabinetry maximized storage, maintaining a clean and organized space ideal for both cooking and gathering. In the bathrooms, we created luxurious, spa-like retreats that provided a quiet contrast to the lively kitchen and living spaces, ensuring that each bathroom was as resilient as it was beautiful.

When construction concluded, we hosted an open house for the homeowners and their neighbors. The feedback was overwhelmingly positive—many were surprised to learn it was new construction, as the home blended so seamlessly into the neighborhood. This project highlights how Armada Design & Build’s approach to personalized design and attention to detail can result in a home that not only meets the modern needs of its owners but also preserves the enduring character of its community.
