The Vision

Our clients came to Armada Design & Build with a clear challenge: their kitchen was small, closed off, and disconnected from the rest of their home. They loved their house but needed more functionality, flow, and openness, particularly in the kitchen. The goal was to transform the space into an open, inviting area that would seamlessly connect with the rest of the living space. This project required both structural adjustments and aesthetic upgrades to meet their needs.

During the consultation process, we met with the clients to discuss their concerns, goals, and overall vision for the remodel. They wanted to prioritize creating a more open layout that would allow for better interaction between the kitchen and the living and dining areas. We spent time going over different design ideas, materials, and layouts. They had specific ideas in mind but were unsure how to achieve their desired results without sacrificing other elements of the home. Our team helped guide them through different design concepts, focusing on a cohesive style that would feel modern yet warm.

Once the plans were finalized, the construction phase began with the removal of the interior wall separating the kitchen from the main living area. Opening up the space immediately allowed more natural light to flow throughout the home and gave the clients the open-concept layout they were hoping for. Structural beams were added to ensure support while maintaining the clean, open feel.

The cabinetry was a key element of this kitchen transformation. Custom-made, the cabinets featured a combination of painted maple in a crisp white finish and stained birch for contrast, giving the kitchen a modern yet timeless look. These cabinets maximized storage space, making the most of every inch of the previously cramped kitchen. The custom-built cabinetry ensured that the kitchen design fit perfectly within the new layout.

For the kitchen countertops, we selected a beautiful quartz surface that offered both durability and elegance. The island featured an additional sink, a practical upgrade that helped improve the kitchen’s functionality. A secondary faucet and sink were installed at the island, making food prep and cleanup a breeze.

The deck area just outside the kitchen was also upgraded. Constructed from tight-knot cedar, the new deck added an outdoor space that seamlessly extended the living area. The deck was a compact but elegant solution, providing the family with an outdoor retreat that matched the new, more open interior space.

Flooring throughout the kitchen and adjacent spaces was replaced with red oak, stained in a custom blend of Country White and Rustic Beige. This combination added a light, airy feel to the home while still providing warmth. The consistent flooring throughout helped create a cohesive look between the kitchen and the rest of the living space, further enhancing the open-concept design.

We installed several new windows and doors to improve both natural light and energy efficiency. These included a mix of modern sliding windows and a French door leading to the deck, making the space feel connected to the outdoors.

In the end, our clients were thrilled with the result. Their once-small, closed-off kitchen was transformed into a bright, functional, and spacious area that became the heart of their home. The collaboration throughout the process ensured their goals were met, and the detailed craftsmanship brought their ideas to life.

Our Process

From the start, our design process focused on understanding their vision for a modern yet warm and inviting kitchen that would enhance both their daily life and the overall flow of their home. They wanted to completely transform their small, isolated kitchen into an open, functional space that would flow naturally into the rest of their home. Their current kitchen felt cramped and disconnected, limiting both their ability to entertain and their day-to-day use. From the very beginning, our design process centered around understanding not only their functional needs but also their aesthetic preferences. They envisioned a kitchen that was modern yet warm, with clean lines, inviting finishes, and a layout that would become the heart of their home.

We spent considerable time in the consultation phase, listening to their ideas and walking them through various design concepts. They wanted a space that was open and bright, yet still cozy and connected to the rest of the living areas. We discussed how we could maximize natural light, create better sightlines, and add functionality, all while preserving the character and comfort of their home. Our team worked closely with them to ensure that each design choice contributed to both the practicality and beauty of the new space, aligning with their goals for daily living and entertaining. During the design phase, we worked closely with the Hackermans to explore different layout options. Their primary concern was opening up the kitchen to the living and dining areas while ensuring ample storage and workspace. We removed the wall separating the kitchen from the rest of the home, allowing natural light to flood in and creating a much more spacious, connected environment. The open layout immediately changed the feel of the home, making it perfect for both everyday use and entertaining. For cabinetry, we selected custom-painted maple in Sherwin-Williams Pure White for the upper cabinets, paired with stained birch for the lower cabinets and the island. This combination provided a clean, modern aesthetic with warmth and texture, creating a balanced design that complemented the open-concept space. The custom-built cabinets maximized storage, offering both functionality and beauty.

We chose MSI Calacatta Luccia quartz for the countertops, a stunning, durable surface that added a touch of elegance while being highly practical for a busy kitchen. For the backsplash, we used ceramic tile in the White Chalk finish from United Tile’s Caress collection. Its soft, subtle texture provided the perfect backdrop without overpowering the rest of the design. The deck, built with tight-knot cedar, offered the family a cozy outdoor space just off the kitchen, further enhancing the flow between indoor and outdoor living. Red oak flooring, stained with a custom mix of Country White and Rustic Beige, tied the entire area together, creating warmth throughout the home. Throughout the installation process, we worked hand-in-hand with the Hackermans, ensuring every detail was executed to their satisfaction. The end result was a beautifully open, functional kitchen that reflected their style and needs perfectly.

Bar Area

The bar area in our clients’ home was designed to be both functional and stylish, offering a perfect space for entertaining while complementing the new kitchen’s aesthetic. To maintain visual cohesion, we opted for custom birch cabinets with slab veneer doors, providing a sleek, modern look that paired seamlessly with the kitchen’s custom cabinetry. The stained birch finish added warmth and texture, balancing the clean lines of the design and making the bar area a focal point without overpowering the space.

For the countertop, we selected a durable, polished stone surface from Allied Marble & Granite. The stone not only added elegance but also provided a durable work surface for serving drinks and preparing snacks. The material was chosen for its resistance to stains and scratches, ensuring it would hold up to everyday use while maintaining its luxurious appearance over time.

We also made sure the bar area was equipped with ample storage, including space for glassware, bottles, and accessories, all organized within the custom cabinetry. This design allowed our clients to keep everything neatly tucked away, yet easily accessible when entertaining guests. The thoughtful placement of the bar, adjacent to the open kitchen and living spaces, made it a natural extension of the home’s overall flow, providing convenience without disrupting the open layout. This bar area is not just a practical addition but a stylish and cohesive element that elevates the overall design of the home, making it perfect for both casual gatherings and more formal entertaining.
